The Detective Bureau of the NYPD was established in the 1880's and has grown tremendously over the last one hundred and twenty years. Today, the Bureau has well over 100 different units and squads, including 76 individual precinct squads, and specific units that utilize detectives, such as robbery, homicide, sex crimes, narcotics, organized crime, bomb, arson, ballistics, gang intelligence, missing persons, bias incidents, hostage negotiations, fraud, auto crime, police impersonation, firearms investigations, aviation, and many other specialties, including counter-terrorism. The division of duties and the structure of the Bureau and the Police Department constantly changes over time with the needs of policing the world's most complex metropolis.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association is comprised of approximately 10,000 active and retired sergeants of the New York City Police Department. An independent union, it acts as the collective bargaining unit for those officers during contract negotiations with the City of New York, and manages a variety of other projects – including health and welfare programs, political outreach efforts and community service initiatives – for the benefit of its members and their families. The breadth of the association’s activities is wide, but above all else, the SBA is an advocate for New York’s police sergeants, the officers who stand at the Frontline of our nation’s largest metropolitan police department.
